The guide
How to work out your break-even ACoS.
The number every ad decision should start from.
ACoS (advertising cost of sales) is your ad spend divided by the sales those ads brought in. Your break-even ACoS is the ACoS where an ad sale makes you exactly zero profit. Go above it and every sale from ads loses money.
Profit before ads is your price, minus VAT or GST, minus product cost, Amazon referral fee, FBA fee and any other costs per unit. If you sell a $30 product and keep $12 before ads, your break-even ACoS is 40%.
Break-even is a ceiling, not a target
At break-even you work for free. Your target ACoS is break-even minus the profit you want to keep. With a 40% break-even and a 10% profit goal, aim for 30%. Launches and ranking pushes can run hotter for a while, but they should have an end date.
Turn it into bids
The calculator also gives you the highest CPC you can pay: price × conversion rate × break-even ACoS. If a keyword converts at 10% on a $30 product with a 40% break-even, any bid above $1.20 loses money on average.
Why TACoS matters more over time
TACoS (total ACoS) is ad spend divided by all your sales, not just ad sales. A falling TACoS means ads are lifting organic rank and you are growing without paying for every sale. A rising TACoS with flat sales means you are renting your revenue. Compare it with your margin before ads in the TACoS tab.
Selling outside the US?
In the UK, EU, Japan, Australia, India and most other marketplaces your price includes VAT or GST. Ad sales in Campaign Manager include it too, but you never keep it. Pick your marketplace and the calculator takes it out for you. This is the most common reason European sellers set their target ACoS too high.
Stop paying for clicks that will never buy.

What is a good ACoS on Amazon?
There is no single good ACoS. A good ACoS is one below your break-even ACoS, and close to your target ACoS for the goal you have right now. A product with a 50% margin can run a 35% ACoS and still make money. A product with a 20% margin cannot.
How do I calculate break-even ACoS?
Take your selling price, subtract VAT or GST, product cost, referral fee, FBA fee and other costs per unit. That is your profit before ads. Divide it by the selling price. The result is your break-even ACoS.
What is the difference between ACoS and TACoS?
ACoS is ad spend divided by ad sales. TACoS is ad spend divided by total sales, including organic. ACoS tells you if ads are efficient. TACoS tells you if ads are helping the whole business grow.
What is break-even ROAS?
ROAS is sales divided by ad spend, the inverse of ACoS. Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your break-even ACoS. A 40% break-even ACoS is a 2.5 break-even ROAS.
Should I include VAT when I calculate ACoS?
Amazon reports ad sales with VAT included in VAT marketplaces, so your ACoS uses the gross price. But you never keep the VAT, so it must come out of your profit. The calculator handles both for you.
