    The guide

How Amazon fees eat into your profit.

Every fee, in the order Amazon takes it.

A calculator and a pen sitting on top of a piece of paper

Most sellers know their product cost. Far fewer know what is left after Amazon, the tax office and their ads have all been paid. This calculator walks down from your selling price to your real profit per unit, one cost at a time.

Net profit = price − VAT − referral fee − FBA fee − storage − digital services fee − shipping to Amazon − product cost − returns − ads

    Referral fee

Amazon charges a referral fee on every sale, usually 15% of the total price including VAT. Some categories are lower, like 8% for consumer electronics, and some change with price. Pick a category and the tool fills in the US rule. Other marketplaces are close but not identical, so you can type your own rate.

    FBA fee

The fulfilment fee depends on your size tier and shipping weight. For the US, open the estimator, enter dimensions and weight, and the tool works out the size tier and an estimated fee from Amazon’s published rate card. For other marketplaces, copy the fee from Seller Central or the Revenue Calculator.

    VAT and GST

In the UK, EU, India, Japan, Australia and most other countries your listed price includes tax. On a £24.99 item, £4.17 goes to HMRC before anything else. Leave that out and every other number on the page is wrong.

    Digital services fee

In some countries, including the UK, France, Italy and Spain, Amazon adds a digital services fee on top of its own fees. It is a percentage of your Amazon fees, not of your price. We fill in the usual rate when you pick one of those marketplaces. Check the current rate in Seller Central.

    Returns and ads

A 5% return rate costs you more than 5%. You lose fees, shipping and often the unit itself. And ads are a real cost per unit too. Enter your TACoS to see profit after ads, and your break-even ACoS for the ACoS calculator.

How much does Amazon take per sale?

For most products Amazon takes a 15% referral fee plus the FBA fee, which starts around $3 for small items in the US. Add storage, returns and ads and it is common for Amazon related costs to reach 35% to 50% of the price.

Yes. In VAT marketplaces Amazon charges the referral fee on the total sales price, VAT included. The calculator does the same.

It follows Amazon’s published 2025 US rate card for standard and bulky items. Your real fee can differ because of packaging, apparel or dangerous goods rules and yearly fee changes, so confirm it in Seller Central before you order stock.

All 23: United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Belgium, Ireland, Türkiye, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, South Africa, India, Japan, Australia and Singapore.

After ads, many healthy brands land between 15% and 30% net margin. Under 10% leaves little room for a price war or a fee rise.
