The guide
Amazon listing limits, in plain English.
What each field allows and how to use the space.
Every part of an Amazon listing has a limit, and going over it can cost you. A title that is too long gets your listing suppressed. Backend search terms over the byte limit can be ignored completely. This tool checks each field as you type.
| Field | Limit | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Title | 200 characters | Brand, product type and main benefit in the first 80 |
| Bullet points | Usually 500 characters each | 150 to 250 characters, one buyer question per bullet |
| Description | 2,000 characters | Fill it even with A+ content |
| Backend search terms | 250 bytes in most marketplaces, 500 in Japan | Synonyms and words not already on the page |
Characters and bytes are not the same
Search terms are measured in bytes. A plain English letter is 1 byte. Letters like ä, é or ñ are 2 bytes, and Japanese characters are 3. A German search term field can fill up much faster than the character count suggests. The counter shows the real byte count.
Title rules that get listings suppressed
- More than 200 characters, including spaces.
- Characters like ! $ ? _ { } ^ ¬ ¦ unless they are part of your brand.
- The same word more than twice, apart from small words like and, for or with.
- Promotional phrases like best seller, free shipping or sale.
Write for mobile first
Most Amazon shoppers browse on a phone, where only the start of the title shows in search. The preview in the results panel shows your title the way a phone shopper sees it. If the product type and main benefit are not visible there, move them forward.
Do not repeat yourself in the backend
Words already in your title or bullets do not need to be in search terms. The tool lists every repeat so you can swap them for synonyms, other languages your buyers use, or common misspellings.

What is the Amazon title character limit?
Most categories allow 200 characters including spaces. Amazon recommends keeping titles shorter and putting the most important words first, because phones show only the start of the title.
How many bytes are allowed in Amazon backend search terms?
Most marketplaces allow less than 250 bytes. Japan allows 500 and India allows 200. If you go over the limit, Amazon may ignore the whole field, not just the extra words.
Do spaces count in Amazon search terms?
Spaces count towards the bytes you type, so the safest approach is to keep the full field, spaces included, under the limit. Commas and semicolons are not needed. Separate words with spaces.
How long should Amazon bullet points be?
Most categories cut bullets at 500 characters. We aim for 150 to 250 so they are easy to skim on mobile, with one benefit or buyer question per bullet.
Is my listing text saved?
No. The counter runs in your browser. Your text is never sent to us or saved.
