Amazon’s Review Crackdown: What Honest Sellers Should Know

A woman sitting at a table looking at her cell phone

Over the past couple of months, Amazon has removed several well known brands from its store over review abuse. Some of them were large sellers with thousands of reviews. Amazon has also been talking publicly about its fight against fake reviews and the brokers who sell them.

If you sell honestly, this is good news. But it is also a good moment to check that everything you do around reviews is clearly within the rules. Here is what we are telling our clients.

What Amazon does not allow

Amazon’s rules on reviews are strict. Among the things that can get an account suspended:

  • Paying for reviews, or giving free or discounted products in exchange for reviews outside Amazon’s own programs.
  • Offering refunds, gift cards or other rewards for reviews.
  • Asking only happy customers to leave reviews.
  • Inserts or emails that ask for positive reviews specifically.
  • Reviewing your own products, or having friends, family or employees do so.
  • Review swapping with other sellers.
  • Asking customers to change or remove negative reviews in exchange for something.

Common grey areas that are risky

  • Product inserts. A neutral “we would love your feedback” note is generally fine. Anything that offers a reward, or asks only for positive reviews, is not.
  • Third-party review clubs and services that promise reviews. Many of them break the rules, and Amazon has been going after them.
  • Diverting unhappy customers. Pointing unhappy customers to support and happy ones to reviews is still review manipulation.

Safe ways to grow reviews

  • Request a Review. Use Amazon’s button in Seller Central, or a tool that uses the same system. It sends a standard, neutral request.
  • Amazon Vine. For new products with few reviews, Vine is Amazon’s own program for honest early reviews. We explained it in our post on Amazon Vine for sellers.
  • A better product experience. Clear instructions, good packaging and accurate listings lead to happier customers and better reviews.
  • Fix what reviews tell you. If customers keep mentioning the same problem, fix it. Your rating will follow.

Audit your own setup

Take an hour this week to review:

  1. Every insert in your packaging.
  2. Every email or message sent to buyers, including from any automation tool.
  3. Any service or agency doing review work for you.
  4. Your listings for any reviews you know came from friends, family or staff.

If anything looks risky, stop it now. It is far easier to fix than to appeal a suspension.

Why this is good for honest brands

When fake reviews are removed, honest brands compete on a fairer field. Shoppers trust ratings more, and good products can win on quality. That is the kind of Amazon we want to sell on.

The bottom line

Amazon is serious about review abuse, and big names have already been caught. Keep your review practices clean, use Amazon’s own tools and focus on a product experience that earns good reviews. If you want help reviewing your account for risks, request a free audit.

FAQs

Can I give free products in exchange for reviews on Amazon?

No, except through Amazon’s own Vine program. Offering free or discounted products for reviews outside Vine breaks Amazon’s rules.

Is the Request a Review button safe to use?

Yes. It is Amazon’s own tool and sends a neutral, standard request to buyers.

Can product inserts ask for reviews?

A neutral request for feedback is generally allowed. Inserts that offer rewards or ask only for positive reviews are not.
