Amazon Product Launch Strategy: Your First 90 Days

A group of coins

The first 90 days of a new Amazon product shape the rest of its life. In that time, Amazon learns what your product is, which searches it fits, and whether shoppers who click actually buy. Get it right and you build rank that keeps paying off. Get it wrong and you can spend months trying to dig out.

This is the launch plan we follow with brands, broken into clear steps you can use for your next product.

Before launch: the work that decides everything

Validate demand and margin

Before you order inventory, make sure people are searching for what you plan to sell, and that you can make money at a competitive price. Check search volume for your main keywords, the prices and review counts of the top 10 sellers, and your landed cost. Then work out your profit after all fees and an honest ad budget. Our guide on how to calculate Amazon profit shows the math.

A product that only makes money with zero advertising is not ready to launch.

Build the listing before stock arrives

Your listing should be finished on day one, not improved in week three. That means:

  • Keyword research done and mapped to the title, bullets and backend.
  • A full set of images, including lifestyle, infographics and size reference.
  • A+ Content ready if you have Brand Registry.
  • Every product attribute filled in.

Our listing optimization checklist covers each part.

Plan for reviews

Reviews are the biggest hurdle for new products. Shoppers hesitate to buy a product with no reviews, and lower conversion makes everything else harder. If your product is eligible, enroll it in Amazon Vine, which gives free units to trusted reviewers in exchange for honest reviews. Turn on Amazon’s Request a Review feature or an automated tool that uses it. Never offer incentives for reviews outside Amazon’s programs. It breaks the rules and puts your account at risk.

Plan inventory

Running out of stock during launch can undo weeks of progress. Order enough to cover at least 90 days at your target sales rate, plus the time it takes to reorder.

Days 1 to 30: get data and first sales

The goal of the first month is not profit. It is data, reviews and early sales history.

Campaign setup

  • Auto campaign with a moderate bid, to discover search terms you have not thought of.
  • Broad or phrase match campaign with your top 15 to 30 keywords.
  • Exact match campaign with your 5 to 10 most relevant keywords, bid higher.
  • Product targeting campaign on competitor listings where your product looks like a good choice, such as better price or better features.

Pricing and offers

A launch coupon or a slightly lower intro price can lift conversion while you have few reviews. Keep it simple and make sure your margin can handle it.

What to watch

  • Impressions and click-through rate for each keyword. Low CTR often points to the main image, price or title.
  • Conversion rate. If it is far below the category, fix the listing before adding budget.
  • Reviews arriving and what they say.

Expect ACoS to be high in this phase. That is normal. Our post on what a good ACoS is explains why launch targets are different.

Days 31 to 60: focus and refine

Now you have real data. Use it.

  • Harvest winners. Move search terms that convert from auto and broad into exact match campaigns.
  • Cut losers. Add negatives for terms with plenty of clicks and no sales. See our guide on cutting wasted ad spend.
  • Push for rank on a few keywords. Pick two or three main keywords that convert well and push bids to win top of search. Ranking on page one for a few strong terms is worth more than page three for fifty.
  • Add Sponsored Brands once you have Brand Registry and a few reviews, to show your brand and product line.
  • Improve the listing based on reviews and questions. If shoppers keep asking the same thing, answer it in a bullet or image.

Days 61 to 90: move toward profit

By now, your product should have reviews, some organic rank and clear winning keywords. The goal shifts from growth at any cost to growth that pays.

  • Lower bids gradually on keywords where you rank well organically.
  • Move your target ACoS closer to break-even, then below it.
  • Remove launch coupons if conversion holds without them.
  • Add Sponsored Display retargeting for shoppers who viewed but did not buy.
  • Watch TACoS. It should be trending down as organic sales grow.

Signs your launch is working

  • Organic sales growing as a share of total sales.
  • Rank improving for your main keywords week over week.
  • Conversion rate at or above category average.
  • Reviews steady, with an average of 4 stars or higher.
  • TACoS falling month over month.

Signs something needs fixing

  • Lots of impressions, few clicks: main image, title, price or review count is not competitive.
  • Lots of clicks, few sales: the listing is not convincing, or the traffic is not relevant.
  • Sales but no organic growth: you are not ranking on the right keywords. Narrow your focus.
  • Bad reviews about the same issue: fix the product or set clearer expectations in the listing.

Common launch mistakes

  • Launching with an unfinished listing.
  • Spreading budget across too many keywords to rank for any of them.
  • Cutting ads too early because ACoS looks high in week two.
  • Running out of stock right as momentum builds.
  • Trying to shortcut reviews with risky tactics.

The bottom line

A good launch is planned, measured and patient. Prepare the listing and stock early, use the first month to gather data, focus your spend in the second, and move toward profit in the third. FAQs

How long does it take to rank a new product on Amazon?

For most products, it takes 4 to 12 weeks of steady sales to build meaningful organic rank. Competitive categories can take longer.

How much should I spend on ads for a product launch?

There is no fixed amount, but plan for an ACoS above break-even for the first 6 to 10 weeks. Set a total launch budget in advance so you can judge results calmly.

Is there an Amazon honeymoon period for new products?

Many sellers believe new listings get a short visibility boost. Do not count on it. Plan your launch so it works even without any special boost.

How do I get my first reviews on Amazon?

Use Amazon Vine if eligible, turn on Request a Review for every order, and make sure the product and packaging make a great first impression. Never pay or offer incentives for reviews outside Amazon’s programs.
