Amazon Coupons vs Promotions: Which Discounts Actually Work

Orange megaphone on orange wall

Discounts can move a lot of product on Amazon. They can also eat your margin without doing much at all. The trick is picking the right type of discount for the right goal.

Here is how Amazon coupons, promotions and deals compare, and when we use each one.

Coupons

Coupons show as a green badge under the price in search results and on the product page. Shoppers click to “clip” the coupon, and the discount applies at checkout.

Good for:

  • Standing out in search results. The badge catches the eye.
  • Launches and slow periods when you need a nudge.
  • Products where a small discount makes a big difference.

Watch out for: there is a fee for each coupon redeemed, plus the discount itself. Set a budget so coupons do not run longer than you planned.

Percentage off promotions

These are discounts set up under Promotions in Seller Central. They can be public or use a claim code that you share with specific people.

Good for:

  • Sending traffic from email or social media with a private code.
  • Rewarding loyal customers.

Watch out for: claim codes can leak to deal sites. Always set a limit per customer, and be careful with deep discounts.

Buy one get one and bundle offers

Buy one get one (BOGO) and “buy more, save more” promotions raise the average order value.

Good for: consumable products, accessories and gifts where people often want more than one.

Watch out for: these promotions are less visible in search. Shoppers usually only see them on the product page.

Lightning Deals and Best Deals

Deals appear on Amazon’s deals page and get a deal badge. Lightning Deals run for a few hours. Best Deals run longer.

Good for: big sales spikes, especially around Prime Day and the holidays.

Watch out for: deals have a fee, require a real discount and need enough stock. They also need strong reviews to perform.

Which discount for which goal?

  • Launch a new product: a coupon to boost conversion while reviews build.
  • Win more clicks in search: a coupon, since the badge is visible.
  • Drive traffic from outside Amazon: a percentage off promotion with a claim code.
  • Raise order value: BOGO or buy more, save more.
  • Big event spike: Lightning Deal or Best Deal.
  • Clear old stock: a coupon or a price cut, before storage fees rise in Q4.

Combine discounts with ads

A coupon plus a Sponsored Products ad can lift both click-through rate and conversion. Watch the numbers, though. If your ACoS falls and sales rise, the coupon is paying for itself. If not, try a smaller discount.

Protect your margin

Before running any discount, work out your profit after the discount, fees and ad cost. Avoid stacking several discounts by mistake. Amazon can combine some promotions, and you can end up selling at a loss.

The bottom line

Use coupons for visibility, promotions for outside traffic and loyalty, BOGO for order value and deals for big events. Always check your margin first. If you want help planning discounts and ads together, see our Amazon PPC management service or request a free audit.

FAQs

Do Amazon coupons cost money?

Yes. Besides the discount itself, Amazon charges a fee for each coupon redeemed. Set a budget to control the total cost.

Can Amazon promotions stack?

Some can. Check your promotion settings carefully so shoppers cannot combine discounts in a way that makes you lose money.

Which discount is best for a new product?

A coupon is often best. The badge is visible in search results and can help conversion while you build reviews.
