GPSR Deadline December 13: What Amazon EU Sellers Must Do

On December 13, 2024, the EU’s General Product Safety Regulation, known as GPSR, starts to apply. It updates the rules for consumer product safety across the EU, and it applies to products sold online, including on Amazon. Amazon has been asking sellers in its EU stores to add new safety information to their listings.
If you sell in the EU, here is what you need to do before the deadline.
What GPSR requires
1. An EU responsible person
Most products sold in the EU need an economic operator based in the EU who is responsible for product safety. If your business is outside the EU, you will usually need to appoint one, such as an importer or an authorized representative.
2. Clear product identification
Products need identifying details such as a type, batch or serial number.
3. Manufacturer and responsible person details
The name and contact details, including postal and electronic addresses, of the manufacturer and the EU responsible person must be on the product, the packaging or an accompanying document.
4. Safety information and warnings
Warnings and safety instructions must be provided in the language of the country where the product is sold.
5. Online listings must show this information
For online sales, listings must show manufacturer details, responsible person details, product identification, images of the product and any warnings or safety information.
What Amazon is asking for
Amazon has added fields in Seller Central for manufacturer and responsible person details, plus a way to upload safety information and images. Listings missing required information may be blocked from sale in the EU stores. Check your Account Health and listing notifications for requests.
Steps to take now
- List every product you sell in the EU.
- Confirm who your EU responsible person is, and appoint one if needed.
- Check that labels and packaging include the required details.
- Prepare safety information and warnings in each local language.
- Add manufacturer and responsible person details in Seller Central for every listing.
- Upload safety documents and product label images where Amazon asks.
Common mistakes
- Assuming GPSR only applies to children’s products or electronics. It covers most consumer products.
- Updating listings but not packaging.
- Providing warnings only in English.
- Leaving it until after the deadline, when listings may already be blocked.
The bigger picture
GPSR adds to other EU rules such as EPR registrations for packaging and electronics, and the VAT changes we covered in our post on EU VAT. Selling in Europe now takes real compliance work. It is worth it for many brands, but plan for it properly.
The bottom line
From December 13, EU listings need an EU responsible person, product identification, manufacturer details and local language safety information. Act now to avoid blocked listings. If you want help with your European catalog, see our catalog and account operations service.
