How to Sell on Amazon Canada as a US Seller

A map of the world made out of chocolate crumbs

If you already sell on Amazon.com, Amazon.ca is one of the easiest new markets you can add. Same language for most shoppers, similar products, a close neighbor for shipping, and often less competition than the US. Many categories that are crowded in the US still have room on page one in Canada.

Maple is named after Canada’s maple leaf, so this one is close to our heart. Here is a practical guide to selling on Amazon Canada as a US seller, from account setup to the details that trip people up.

Why Amazon Canada is worth a look

  • Shoppers are already there. Amazon.ca is the biggest online store in Canada.
  • Less competition. Fewer sellers often means lower cost per click and an easier path to page one.
  • Your listings mostly transfer. English copy, images and A+ content can be reused with some local edits.
  • One account. The North America unified account lets you manage the US, Canada and Mexico from the same Seller Central login.

Step 1. Turn on Canada in your Seller Central account

If you have a professional US seller account, you can add Canada through the North America unified account. Use the marketplace switcher at the top of Seller Central, choose Canada, and follow the prompts to register. You will need to add a payment method that can receive Canadian dollars or use Amazon’s currency converter.

Step 2. Choose how you will fulfill orders

This is the biggest decision. You have three main options.

Option A. Ship inventory to Canadian FBA warehouses

You send stock to Amazon fulfillment centers in Canada, just like you do in the US. Shoppers get fast Prime delivery, which helps conversion a lot.

The catch is customs. Amazon will not act as your importer of record. You need a business that can import into Canada, usually with the help of a customs broker, and you need to handle duties and taxes on the way in. Many US sellers register as a non-resident importer for this.

Option B. Remote Fulfillment with FBA

Amazon has offered a program that lets eligible US sellers fulfill Canadian orders straight from US FBA inventory. Amazon handles the cross-border shipping and customs, and you pay a fee per unit. It is the fastest way to test demand without sending stock north. Check Seller Central for current eligibility, fees and delivery times before you rely on it.

Option C. Fulfill orders yourself

You can ship orders to Canadian customers from the US yourself. This is simple to start, but delivery is slower and you usually lose the Prime badge, so conversion tends to be lower.

A common path is to start with Remote Fulfillment or a small test, prove that products sell, and then move your best sellers into Canadian FBA warehouses.

Step 3. Get your listings ready for Canadian shoppers

Amazon’s Build International Listings tool can copy your US offers to Canada and keep prices in sync. It is a good start, but do not stop there.

  • Units. Canada uses metric. Add centimeters, kilograms and milliliters next to inches, pounds and ounces.
  • Spelling. Canadians often use British style spelling such as “colour” and “centre”. Add these to backend search terms if your data shows people search that way.
  • Keywords. Do fresh keyword research on Amazon.ca. Search habits are similar but not identical.
  • French. Some shoppers, especially in Quebec, browse in French. Adding French content can help in some categories.
  • Images and A+. Make sure any text in images works for Canadian shoppers, such as sizes and certifications.

Step 4. Check labeling and product rules

Canada has its own rules, and they can be stricter than the US in some categories.

  • Most consumer packaging must show key information in both English and French.
  • Food, cosmetics, supplements, electronics and children’s products have extra rules from Canadian regulators.
  • Some products need Canadian certifications or approvals, even if they are approved in the US.

Check the rules for your category before you ship anything. Fixing packaging after it is in a warehouse is expensive.

Step 5. Understand taxes

Canada has a federal sales tax (GST) and provincial taxes (HST, PST or QST depending on the province). Amazon collects and remits these on many sales, but your own registration needs depend on how you sell and how much. Talk to an accountant who works with cross-border e-commerce before you scale.

Step 6. Price for the Canadian market

Do not just convert your US price at today’s exchange rate. Look at competitor prices on Amazon.ca, include your extra costs (shipping, duties, fees, currency conversion), and work out your margin. Then set a price that is competitive and still profitable. Our guide on how to calculate your real Amazon profit walks through the math.

Step 7. Advertise from day one

New listings in Canada start with no sales history, so organic rank will take time. Run Sponsored Products from the start, with separate campaigns for Canada. Do not assume your US bids and keywords will work the same way.

  • Start with auto campaigns to learn how Canadians search.
  • Add exact match campaigns for your proven US keywords that also have volume in Canada.
  • Expect lower cost per click in many categories, which can make early ranking cheaper.
  • Clean up wasted spend weekly. Our free Ad Waste Finder works with Canadian search term reports too.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Copying US listings without changing units, spelling or keywords.
  • Sending stock to Canadian warehouses without a plan for customs and import.
  • Ignoring bilingual labeling on packaging.
  • Pricing too close to the US price and losing money after extra costs.
  • Letting Canadian stock run out. Restock times can be longer because of the border.

The bottom line

Amazon Canada is a smart first step into global selling for US brands. Start small, test which products sell, then invest in local FBA stock for the winners.
